Find the main water valve. It’s usually on the side of the house near the water meter, or sometimes in the garage.

Turn the valve off. This helps keep water from flooding the house if a pipe breaks.

Turn off the pool and the water heater the way the maker says. Unplug them, and flip the breaker switch off.

Turn off the power and the water valve for the sprinkler system.

Pick up loose stuff outside—like chairs, yard décor, and toys—and bring them inside.
